We are currently completing the compilation of the Selection Policy but we use Guidelines to conduct selection of teams. The Guidelines are in line with the National Policy on ensuring that all eligible players are given opportunity. Eligibility covers competitiveness and it also takes into consideration the Target Policy (previously referred to as the Quota system).

Once a team has been selected, NSA Executive has to ratify the team to ensure that policy matters were considered and policy adhered to.

When one looks at all the current teams one can confidently state that netball has progressed as far as the Target policy is concerned. In the final 12 players to represent the country in Florida (U/21) we have a 50:50 representation. We have a squad of Senior players that is currently being prepared for the Commonwealth Games next year. We envisage the representation similar to that of the U/21.

A stage has been reached in netball where some regions struggle because they have to leave out good players because of the Target Policy but Council will discuss this matter in August.

Selection of squads is done at our S A Champion ships and then trials are held to select a team of 12 players. Development is hindered by the fact that we do not have sponsorship for all the players selected into squads to be in programmes. Players with potential to represent tie country do not have proper coaching and support for training because of lack of funding. We are also short of quality coaches because we do not have a programme for up-and-coming coaches. Most players come from poor background families and they need financial support. Players who make it to the Protea team are not paid. This results in some leaving the country. Most players have completed their schooling and they struggle to get jobs. This puts pressure on them when they have to choose between representing the country and taking a job. Companies do not recognize a netball player who is in the Protea team and players therefore do not get leave to perform national duty. The above situation affects selection because we do not always get the best players to select from.
